Textiles have always been one of China's most important industries. When the process of economic reform began in China in 1979, China's textile and garment industries, which were highly competitive in international terms, became a major source of exports. These industries also attracted a great deal of foreign investment. By the mid-1990s, China had become the world's largest producer (and exporter) of textiles and garments; however, most Chinese garment manufacturers have been in existence for only a relatively short period and are small in size; as a result, there is still a significant disparity between the Chinese manufacturers and the leading international garment manufacturers in terms of both size and the degree of influence they are able to exercise....;
