The CIER established The Japan Center Sub Committee in 2003 to address the growing demand for Japan-related activities in Taiwan and support government agencies in advancing Japan-focused initiatives. The Center is dedicated to building a platform for Taiwan-Japan exchanges across industry, government, academia, and research while fostering deeper bilateral engagement and cooperation. Over the years, the Center has successfully created a high-level exchange platform through initiatives such as technology summits, specialized technology seminars, high-level technology delegations to Japan, and targeted research on specific issues. These efforts have facilitated closer interactions between Taiwan’s industry, government, academia, and research sectors, as well as their Japanese counterparts. The Center also monitors global political, economic, technological, and industrial trends to develop forward-looking strategies for Taiwan-Japan collaboration and provide policy recommendations.
Japan is a technological leader among Asian nations and a vital partner for Taiwan in the East Asian economic division of labor. In recent years, evolving global political and economic dynamics—such as the rise of emerging economies, accelerated regional economic integration, and the aging populations in advanced economies—have underscored the growing importance of Taiwan-Japan cooperation.
Guided by principles of foresight and timeliness, the Center studies specific Taiwan-Japan issues to form a dynamic and responsive framework for Taiwan-Japan exchanges and cooperation. The key research areas include industrial innovation, technological linkages, and mechanisms for industry-academia collaboration. Research outcomes are disseminated through various communication channels to enhance outreach and engagement with Japan, thereby strengthening the results and tangible benefits of Taiwan-Japan political, economic, technological, academic, and industrial exchanges.
