In this paper I adopted the approach revised by Wang, Sun and Chou (1992) to analyze the sources of economic growth and structural change under an interindustry framework in mainland China in 1980’s. There are 11 terms of source effects in the paper that the first four terms represent the deviation in domestic demand, export expansion, import substitution and technological change. The remaining 7 terms are the effects of cross products, which result in the interaction of two or there of the former four terms.
According to the data collected, this paper adjusts the input-output tables published by mainland China in 1981, 1987 and 1990 to the comparable sectional classification and same based prices. The empirical results show that the effects of various factors are rather different between two periods (1981-1987, 1987-1990). This evident is a valuable reference for studying industrial development of mainland China.
