The American textile market is one of the most important export markets for Taiwan and Mainland China. Therefore, Taiwan’s and Mainland China’s exports of textile products to the United States are strongly competitive.

We use two different methods to analyze which textile products are most important, as follows:

1. Indices of Relative Export Performance:

According to the degree of competitiveness of textile products, we can obtain three categories of competitive products (based on the Tariff Schedules of the United States), as shown below:

(1) Strongly Competitive Textile Products: 320, 323, 326, 366, 389.

(2) Not So Strongly Competitive Textile Products: 329, 365, 378, 379, 383, 386.

(3) Weakly Competitive Textile Products: 300, 321, 322, 325, 328, 331, 335, 363, 370, 374, 385.

2. Market Share:

There were 60 types of textile products which were strongly competitive in 1985 and another 13 types of textile products which are likely to become strongly competitive in 1986.
