This monograph provides a comprehensive, in-depth study of the financial system in Taiwan. It reviews the evolution of the financial system, analyzes its present form, and makes policy recommendations for its improvement.
The monograph is organized in the following way. After an introduction, the importance of financial factors in the process of economic development is discussed in Chapter 2. Chapter 3 describes the current shape of the financial system in Taiwan, emphasizing one of its most salient characteristics, financial dualism. Chapters 4 and 5 look at the major defects of the system and review the ongoing debate on how to reform the system. In Chapter 6, the experiences of South Korea and Indonesia in implementing financial liberalization measures are presented for their comparative value. Finally, Chapter 7 concludes the study with a set of policy recommendations.
