I The SMEs basic statistical information
(Ⅰ) The Management Survey of SMEs Statistical indicators for Taiwan’s SME sector in 2005 – including the number of SMEs, the number of employed persons and paid employees working in SMEs, total sales, domestic sales and export sales – all displayed steady growth compared to 2004. The increases in the number of SMEs and in SME export sales were particularly pronounced. The key statistical data for Taiwan’s SMEs in 2005 were as follows:
Number of Enterprises: (1) There were some 1,226,000 SMEs, representing an annual increase of 49,000 (4.17%) up on 2004. The SMEs’ accounted for 97.80% of all enterprises in Taiwan; (2) 41.83% of SMEs had been in existence for more than ten years ; 10.22% have been in existence for less than one year. (3) Sole proprietorships accounted for 58.51% of all SMEs; (4) The wholesaling and retailing sector, accounts for the largest share of Taiwanese SMEs, at 53.14%; (5) The Northern Taiwan region had the largest concentration of SMEs, with 46.21% of all SMEs; (6) The Taipei county’s agriculture, the industry and service compare to other county or cities, have a more balanced development. The service industry of Taipei City occupies the largest amount.
In sales aspect: (1) Domestic sales accounted for 84.81% of Taiwanese SMEs’ total sales, while export sales held a 15.19% share; there was thus a 69.62 percentage point disparity between the two; (2) The service sector’s share of total sales and domestic sales for all SMEs rose by 3.47% and 4.12% respectively, but its share of total SME export sales fell by 2.72%. The manufacturing sector’s share of total sales and domestic sales for all SMEs fell by 0.33% and 0.89% respectively, but its share of total SME export sales increased by 2.35%. (3) Manufacturing industry and the wholesaling and retailing sector accounted for almost the whole of Taiwanese SMEs’ exports. The shares of total exports held by these two sectors were 68.65% and 27.47
