Taiwan Launches AI Infrastructure Initiative to Become Global AI Hub

The Taiwanese government has launched the “New Ten Major AI Construction Projects” initiative, committing over NT$100 billion to invest in essential technologies. This initiative focuses on advancements in areas such as silicon photonics, quantum computing, and intelligent robotics. The comprehensive plan aims to cultivate one million AI professionals and targets NT$7 trillion in output value by 2028, with projections reaching NT$15 trillion by 2040. Taiwan’s leadership in the semiconductor industry plays a crucial role within global supply chains, creating a strategic foundation for the integration of AI hardware and software capabilities. This positioning not only supports economic advancement but also boosts international competitiveness.

Jiann-Chyuan Wang, Vice President of the Chung-Hua Institution for Economic Research (CIER), emphasized that AI has emerged as the primary driver of export growth. He noted that the integration of emerging technologies such as network communications and silicon photonics presents Taiwan with an opportunity to “overtake on the curve,” facilitating industrial transformation and reinforcing Taiwan’s pivotal role in the global AI ecosystem. Vice President Wang projects that generative AI could contribute an additional 0.1 to 0.2 percentage points of annual GDP growth over the next two decades, representing a significant engine for future economic expansion.

The New Ten Major AI Construction Projects represent more than technological advancement; they constitute the strategic core of national transformation. This initiative aims to propel both “AI industrialization” and “industrial AI adoption,” creating job opportunities and attracting investment. Ultimately, it will strengthen Taiwan’s leadership role in the global AI landscape. This comprehensive approach will position Taiwan to leverage its existing technological strengths while building new capabilities for the AI-driven global economy.
