The aim of this project is to identify the scope of Taiwan’s ocean industries and to analyze the feasibility of the product value of ocean industries to reach 5% of Taiwan’s GDP within five years. Besides, the project is going to review Taiwan’s ocean policies and related laws and to make suggestions. By consulting the classification of the United State, Canada, French, Australia, China, Japan, Korea, and the European Union, we utilized the data from 2002 to 2008 to calculate the ratio of the product value of ocean industries to Taiwan’s GDP which was from 4.76% to 5.73%. Furthermore, we estimated the ratio of the product value of ocean industries to Taiwan’s GDP, and the number ranges from 5.52% to 6.41% within five years.
The results from this project also show that: (1) The product value of ocean industries to Taiwan’s GDP has been over 5% (2) Some gross product of ocean industries were in recession, especially for boat renting and container renting. (3) Several ocean industries were in high speed growth.
Some suggestions are made as follows: (1) There exist some missing data in this project, in order to provide accurate and precise information about ocean industries, we need to go in deep and collect those data in the future (2) In order to gather needed information of ocean industries and related policies, it is needed to strengthen the communications between different public sectors (3) Putting more attention to the trend of ocean industry in other countries, it is a good way to understand and adjust our ocean policies.
