Regional integration enhances the strength of member countries in striving for mutual interests but the dynamic change of political and economic situations worldwide also causes transnational impacts in the globalization era. For ASEAN member states, in particular, some potential factors influenced by recent international events and issues may mediate the integration process although that has already been in full swing for a long period of time. Therefore, attention needs to be drawn for ASEAN countries to the factors such as the catastrophic European debt crisis that may shadow the economic development in Asia, the proactive promotion of Trans Pacific Partnership (TPP) by the United States in resuming its leadership in Asia-Pacific region, the improving achievements in political and economic reform in Myanmar, Vietnam, and Cambodia that shine the Indo-China Peninsula as a bright star in Southeast Asia, and the imperative cooperation in facing global climate change and energy crisis beside the pursuit of regional economic development.

As a result, Taiwan ASEAN Studies Center is preparing for presenting the international conference onASEAN Integration under the Global Political and Economic Trends: Major Issues, Impacts and Responses” in Taipei on Sep 7th, 2012. The center plans to invite scholars and experts specialized in related areas to participate in this conference, and have discussions and conversations on the global and regional important issues together. Four issues are now arranged on the agenda, including Session I: The Implications of European Debt Crisis and its Influence on ASEAN Economic Integration, Session II: The Position of ASEAN in the Co-opetitional Status between TPP and East Asia Integration, Session III: Recent Development in the CLMV Countries and Its Implications on ASEAN Integration, Session IV: The Cooperation between Taiwan and ASEAN under Global Climate Change and Energy Crisis: Status quo and Prospects. Through diverse perspectives from the industries, government, and academia, it is expected to stimulate thinking and suggestions for Taiwanese policy makers and provide the audience a better understanding of the development of ASEAN as well.
