The Taiwan WTO Center

The WTO is one of the most important international organizations of which Taiwan is a member. It was, and still is, very important to Taiwan's economic development. As WTO affairs are numerous and their scope quite expansive, the WTO Center was established in September of 2003 as a WTO research and consultation center assigned to Taiwan. This center has seven major missions and functions, outlined as follows: (1) To provide analysis and opinions in the fields of economics, law, industry and politics for the government's decision-making related to international economics and trade. (2) To assist the government in analyzing WTO matters and multilateral negotiation themes, as well as development trends in themes relevant to similar organizations with the goal of mapping out strategies and future countermeasures for Taiwan's participation in international trade and economic matters. (3) To carry out instant targeted research for timely assistance to the government. (4) To provide the government with consultation services. (5) To integrate relevant information to build a WTO network portal that would provide timely information for all with the goal of knowledge sharing. (6) Through a systematic human resources training program, to assist in the training of manpower resources, and build a WTO talent and faculty databank with the purpose of solidifying Taiwan's participation capabilities in international economic and trade issues. (7) Through international exchanges, to develop networking relationships with local and international organizations with the goal of improving the international awareness of Taiwan's experts on law, trade and economics, as well as to help them obtain international understanding of key issues and enhance Taiwan's ability to participate in international economic and trade issues. The major objectives of the first four functions consist of providing ample and timely assistance to the government in relation to decision-making and negotiations on WTO matters.
